A birdie in golf is when a player completes a hole in one stroke fewer than par, the predetermined number of strokes for that hole. For example, finishing a par-4 hole in 3 strokes is a birdie. The term originated in American golf slang, possibly because a 'bird' was a slang term for something excellent or desirable. Two strokes under par is called an eagle, and three strokes under par is an albatross (extremely rare). A bogey is one stroke over par.
