Cones are specialized photoreceptor cells in the retina responsible for color vision and detailed visual acuity in bright light conditions. The human eye contains three types of cone cells, each containing a different light-sensitive pigment (opsin) that responds maximally to different wavelengths: short (blue), medium (green), and long (red) wavelengths. Cones require higher light intensities than rods to function and provide excellent color discrimination. Humans have approximately 6-7 million cones concentrated in the fovea (central retina), explaining why central vision is clearest.
