Heinrich Schliemann
German businessman Heinrich Schliemann excavated the hill of Hissarlik in western Turkey from 1870, convinced Homer's Troy was a real place. He uncovered multiple layers of ancient cities stacked on top of each other. He is credited with identifying the site of Troy, though his methods were controversial.
