Which ancient wonder rose over 330 feet into the sky, surpassed in height only by the Great Pyramid, before being toppled by a series of earthquakes?

Answer

Lighthouse of Alexandria

Built around 280 BC near Alexandria, the lighthouse used a fire and polished mirrors to guide ships safely into the harbor for roughly 1,600 years. A series of earthquakes between 956 and 1323 AD progressively damaged the structure, and its remaining stones were later used to build the Qaitbay Citadel on the same site.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built on an island called Pharos — and the island's name became the root of the word for "lighthouse" in many languages.
