Carl Diem, secretary-general of the 1936 Berlin Olympics organizing committee, conceived and staged the torch relay from Olympia, Greece, to Berlin. It was designed to evoke ancient Greek heritage while glorifying the Nazi regime, and was later preserved by the IOC as an Olympic tradition.
