Thomas Jefferson served as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. Jefferson, a Virginia lawyer and philosopher, was selected for his writing ability and intellect to draft this revolutionary document articulating the colonies' reasons for independence. Though Jefferson composed the declaration, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams made significant editorial contributions before Congress formally adopted it.
