Bioluminescence is light produced by organisms through a chemical reaction between luciferin (the light-emitting compound) and luciferase (the enzyme catalyst). When luciferin combines with oxygen in the presence of luciferase, it undergoes oxidation that releases light energy. Remarkably efficient, this 'cold light' reaction converts nearly all energy to light rather than heat. About 80% of deep-sea animals between 200-1,000 meters depth are bioluminescent, primarily emitting blue-green light that travels farthest underwater.
