Worcestershire sauce was created in England but was inspired by a recipe from which country?
Answer
India (Bengal)
In the 1830s, Lord Marcus Sandys, a former Governor of Bengal, asked Worcester chemists John Lea and William Perrins to recreate a sauce he had encountered in India. The first batch tasted terrible and was stored in their cellar; when they returned to it two years later, the sauce had fermented and mellowed into something remarkable. They bought the recipe, began bottling it, and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce has been sold commercially ever since.
